Celebrating the 70-Day Gratitude Challenge

Gratitude is a powerful tool that can shift our perspective and enhance our well-being. One way to harness this power is through a structured practice, such as the Gratitude Challenge. Today, we celebrate the 70-Day Gratitude Challenge, an initiative designed to help individuals cultivate a deeper appreciation for life.

Problem

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in negativity and overlook the blessings that surround us. Stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction can cloud our minds, making it difficult to recognize the good things in life. This is where the Gratitude Challenge comes in. By committing to a period of focused gratitude, we can retrain our minds to notice and celebrate what truly matters.

Does This Really Matter?

You might wonder if participating in a 70-day challenge really makes a difference. The answer is a resounding yes! Research shows that practicing gratitude can lead to increased happiness, improved mental health, and stronger relationships. When we take time each day to acknowledge what we are thankful for, we create a positive feedback loop that enhances our overall well-being.

Scripture

Many are familiar with the biblical verse from 1 Thessalonians 5:18: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." This verse encourages us to appreciate both the highs and lows of life. By engaging in the Gratitude Challenge, we embody this spirit of thankfulness, learning to express appreciation even during tough times.

What If?

What if you dedicated just a few moments each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for? Picture yourself waking up in the morning, taking a deep breath, and listing three things that bring you joy. This simple practice can set a positive tone for your day and help you face challenges with resilience.

Imagine

Imagine keeping a gratitude journal for 70 days. Each day, you jot down something different that you appreciate—be it a warm cup of coffee, a kind word from a friend, or even a sunny afternoon. As the days pass, you’ll begin to notice patterns and themes in your life. Your perspective will shift as you start to recognize how much beauty and kindness exists around you.

My Experience for the Inaugural 70-Day Gratitude Challenge

I’ve said it for years, but I think I’ve only started to grasp it in the past 70 days…

Gratitude is a game changer.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I know what the studies show—if you feel gratitude and write it in journal in 21-28 days you’ll report being 10% happier. But I didn’t expect—choosing to give thanks, feeling gratitude for what I give thanks for and showing appreciation for what I feel gratitude for—to make such a profound difference in my life.

I’d tell people this is what I’m doing, “Well that’s easy”. I’m “The challenge is doing is every day for 70 days” and it was. By day 28 I was realizing I was laughing out loud more and singing worship songs when none were playing. It became fun…until around day 43. I got out of my rhythm.

My rhythm was to journal. I write down my thoughts to God. Present them to him so he can direct my steps or pour out my complaint to Him—yes those days still happen. Then I would write “What do you want me to feel gratitude for today?” And I’d meditate and read the Bible. Often in the meditation or Bible Reading I’d feel gratitude. If it didn’t happen, I’d be still and know He is God, then follow where my compassion led in my thoughts. Soon I’d feel gratitude, then I would write what I felt gratitude in the journal. Often it was for God or something He does, so my journal entry would naturally turn to praise because that’s how we show appreciation to God for who He is and what He does.

This is a rhythm I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

I am changed and I am being changed through gratitude. It’s a game changer.

You can do your own 70-Day Gratitude Challenge any time. You can do it with any body. My material is decidedly Christian, but you can do with people of any faith or no faith. All you need to do is:

Every day for 70 days…

Choose to give thanks
Feel grateful for what you give thanks for
Show appreciation for what you feel gratitude for

And figure out how you’ll do it as a group. The possibilities are endless. You do you. Daily phone call or group text; weekly check in through a video call on at a local coffee shop; celebrating milestones—like letting someone in when they indicate they want to be in your lane—with a group cheer or night out.

Thanksgiving is a great time to start.

Studies show that 3 sets of 21 or 63 - 70 days our brains move our conscious thoughts to the autonomic part of our brain. You’ll naturally feel gratitude in about 63 - 70 days - which is why the challenge is that long.

Also did you know we can’t hold anxiousness and gratitude in our minds at the same time? It’s either one or the other.

When I laugh, my heart is lifted, and my burdens feel lighter. A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. I laugh at the enemy who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. What He intends for evil, my God will use for the good. Gratitude for the good things of God makes it easy for me to laugh.

My mouth is filled with laughter, and my tongue with shouts of joy. Indeed, when I laugh, it is a testament to the great things the Lord has done for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. And He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagles as I trust and wait on the Lord!

In times of trouble, I remember He will fill my mouth with laughter and my lips with shouting. He rejoices over me with singing. He quiets me with His love. Even in the midst of difficulties, laughter can fill my mouth as He brings me joy.

Laughter also brings healing to my soul. A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but from the sorrow of the heart, the spirit is crushed. When I choose laughter, I am choosing to mend my spirit and find comfort in the midst of pain.

Laughter is good medicine. I look to see how God sees my pain. He speaks life and hope and truth. He tells me to be a child to enter His Kingdom. A 4-year-old laughs 300 times a day and a 40-year-old laughs about four. I want to be more like His child.

I am joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. When laughter fills my heart, it becomes easier to hold on to hope and trust in God’s plan for my life.

I remember there is a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance. In this moment, I am embracing the time appointed for joy.

When I laugh, I let go of anxiety and trust in God’s provision. I am not anxious about anything, but pray about everything with thanksgiving. As I trust in Him, the God of hope fills me with peace and joy so I can overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit. He makes known to me the path of life; you fill me with joy in His presence, with eternal pleasures at His right hand.

A cheerful heart has a continual feast. When laughter fills my heart, it is as if I am partaking in a feast of joy and contentment that surpasses any worldly circumstances. Laughter reminds me of God’s goodness and faithfulness. The Lord has done great things for me; I am glad. When I laugh, I am expressing my gratitude for all the great things God has done in my life.

Today, in laughter that I find strength, healing, and joy. I am reminded of God’s presence and provision in every aspect of my life. So I embrace laughter and find solace in its transformative power. I am thankful I can laugh.

  2. Am I prioritizing times of laughter and joy in my life, especially during difficult circumstances, to remind myself of Your faithfulness and provision?
  3. In what ways can I spread laughter and joy to those around me, being mindful of the contagious nature of a joyful heart?

Read My life is full of blessings and I am hopeful

My life is full of blessings because God is so good. He has guided me through the darkest times, giving me strength and hope. I have been through the fire and not been burned and through the water and not been drowned. In moments of doubt, He reminds me I am never alone and tells me to be strong and courageous and not be afraid or discouraged, for He is with me wherever I go.

I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. His grace has transformed my life, showing me the way to forgiveness and reconciliation. I forgive the way Christ has forgiven me.

In times of uncertainty, God’s Word has been my anchor. His word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Through His Word, He has provided guidance and wisdom, shaping my character and molding my heart. How can anyone keep themselves pure? By obeying your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

God’s blessings are abundant and overflowing. He has blessed me with a loving family and faithful friends who support and uplift me. Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring are a reward from Him. His provision and faithfulness never cease to amaze me. My God will meet all my needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus!

Through His goodness, God has given me purpose and a calling to serve others. We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. He has equipped me with unique gifts and talents to make a positive impact in my Every day world. I use whatever gift I have received to serve others as a faithful steward of God’s grace in its various forms.

Today, I am grateful for God’s faithfulness and provision in my life. His blessings are evident in every aspect of my journey. I give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. My life is truly filled with abundance because God is so good.

When I wake up each morning, I am filled with gratitude for the life I have been given. Knowing that I am loved by God brings me a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose. Because He first loved me, I can live loved.

I find strength, hope, and joy in every step of my journey. And I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I know the plans You have for me are plans to prosper me and not to harm me, plans to give me hope and a future. No weapons formed against me will prosper, all who rise against me will fall.

When I am afraid, I’ll put my trust in You. Because You are with me. I will not be dismayed, for You are my God. You will strengthen me and help me; You will uphold me with Your righteous right hand. Since You are for me, who can be against me?

I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus my Lord. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

When I feel inadequate or unworthy, I remember You want me to have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is for me. I want to experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully, so I will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

In times of worry or anxiety, realize Your perfect love casts out all fear. Love that I receive from You and share with others is perfect love. I realize You are my shepherd and I lack nothing. So I can love others with genuine affection.

Today, the love of God transforms my life. It brings me deep fulfillment and gratitude each day. Knowing that I am loved by Him means I can live loved and gives me strength, purpose, and hope. Through His love, I find true fulfillment in every aspect of my life.

  2. What does it mean for me to trust in God’s plans for my life, and how does that give me hope and a sense of purpose?

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of Your wonderful deeds. Gratitude flows from the depths of my soul, acknowledging the goodness of God’s will and works.

A humble heart is a thankful heart. It is by grace I have been saved through faith. And this is not my own doing; it is the gift of God. A humble heart acknowledges salvation as a gift and expresses gratitude for God’s unmerited favour.

I trust in You with all my heart and I don’t lean on my own understanding; in all my ways I seek first Your kingdom to come and Your will to be done, and You make my paths straight. A humble heart relinquishes control and trusts in God’s guidance. I do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, I value others above myself. He has shown me what is good and what He requires of me—to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with my God. A humble heart doesn’t demand its own way.

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honour. I humble myself before God and towards others and trust that He will lift me up in due time and for His purpose. As part of God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, I clothe myself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. I humble myself with thanksgiving.

A thankful heart is a humble heart. O Lord, You have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know, when I sit down or stand up and You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home and You know everything I do before I do it and what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. And You go before me and follow me and You place Your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!

Today, I am reminded that a humble heart is indeed a thankful heart. And a thankful heart remains ever humble before our gracious God.

  1. How can I cultivate a humble heart that acknowledges and expresses gratitude for God’s unmerited favour?
  2. In what ways can I relinquish control and trust in God’s guidance instead of relying solely on my own understanding?
  3. How can I actively show humility by valuing others above myself and seeking to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with my God?

I give thanks with my whole heart - I choose thanksgiving; I feel gratitude and I show appreciation. When I choose to give thanks, it’s a decision of my will. When I feel gratitude, that connects my emotions. And when I show appreciation, it aligns my action with my decision and emotions. My decision, my emotions and actions make up my whole heart.

I choose thanksgiving. Every morning, I make a conscious choice to give thanks for the gift of life and for the opportunities that lie ahead. I will give thanks to You, Lord, with all my heart; and I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds. I give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for me in Christ Jesus. I choose to give thanks at the end of the day for specific things that happened for that day. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to declare His steadfast love in the morning, and His faithfulness by night.

I feel gratitude. Gratitude wells up within me as I reflect on the countless blessings showered upon me. Gratitude is a feeling I experience for the good things in my life. It involves choosing to recognize and acknowledge the blessings, kindness, or positive experiences that I have received from God and others in their day-to-day of every day.

Gratitude is often accompanied by a sense of humility. I can’t feel gratitude and pride at the same time. I let the peace of Christ rule in my heart, to which indeed I was called in one body. And I am thankful. This leads to a desire to express thanks or show acts of kindness in return.

I show appreciation. Gratitude should not be confined to mere words, but should be expressed through actions. The action could be to write in a gratitude journal, or it might be by showing my appreciation in practical ways. It could be expressed by acts of kindness in return for the kindness shown to me. Since I live by the Spirit, I keep in step with the Spirit and obey what He tells me to show appreciation. I will be still and know that He is God and follow the impressions that come to me.

Today, I choose to give thanks, feel gratitude, and show appreciation. Choosing to give thanks with my whole heart is essential for my journey with Him. My whole heart aligns with His heart for me, and I am blessed with peace and hope and joy as I trust in Him.

In the day-to-day of my everyday life, I realize the importance of having a thankful heart. It is through gratitude that I can truly appreciate the blessings bestowed upon me. These blessings I respond to in faith by being faithful to them. I am faithful to my family, my work, my church, and ultimately, my God.

I honour my father and mother so that it may be well with me and so I may live long on the earth. A friend loves at all times, and a sibling is born to help in time of need. I give thanks for them and am faithful to them. I honour my spouse and love them. Being patient and kind, not jealous or boastful or proud or rude, is a choice I make to love and honour them. I do not demand my own way and do my best to not be irritable. And I keep no record of being wronged and rejoice whenever the truth wins out. I never give up and I never lose faith and I am always hopeful, and endure—God helping me—through every circumstance. I am faithful to those God has entrusted to me and blessed me with.

I am faithful to receive a living through the gifts, talents and abilities God has blessed me with. Gratitude for these gifts opens the door to use them with excellence. Whatever I do, I work with my whole heart as unto the Lord. I am not slothful in zeal, but fervent in spirit, working hard, so I will not be a burden to anyone. I make it my ambition to lead a quiet life and work with my hands. The favour of the Lord my God is upon me and He establishes the work of my hands.

I don’t give up meeting together, but I consider how to stir up others and be stirred up by others towards love and good works. Where two or three have gathered together in His name, He is there. I am faithful to encourage and build others up, and don't neglect to ask for prayer and help from them. How good and pleasant it is for people to gather in harmony! I am faithful for as long as it depends on me, to be at peace with everyone.

I know Jesus said, “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.” I need to love Him more than my earliest love, my nearest love, and my dearest love. As I am faithful to God, I am faithful to them. As I am faithful to them, I am faithful to God.

A thankful heart is a faithful heart. Gratitude transforms my perspective and deepens my relationships with God and with others. By being faithful to my family, work, church, and—most importantly—to God, I can cultivate a heart filled with gratitude.

Today, I find strength, joy, and purpose in every step of my journey and remember a thankful heart is a faithful heart.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the countless blessings that the Lord has poured upon me. Each day, I am reminded of His faithfulness and love, as His blessings shine brightly in my life, just like the stars in the night sky.

He blesses me, and I am truly blessed. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Indeed, He is my guide, my protector, and my provider. In His loving care, I lack no good thing. He has blessed me abundantly with all that I need and more. I am filled with awe and thanksgiving for His provision in every aspect of my life.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits. How could I forget the countless ways He has shown His love and grace? From the simplest joys to the greatest triumphs, His hand is evident in every blessing that I receive. It is a humbling experience to acknowledge and appreciate the goodness of the Lord in my life. God is so good! I will praise Him and thank Him with all of my heart.

I know every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. The blessings that I receive are not mere coincidences or random occurrences; they are gifts from a loving Heavenly Father who delights in blessing His children. Like the stars that shine brightly in the darkness, each blessing serves as a reminder of His unfailing love and grace.

My God supplies every need of mine according to His riches in glory. The Lord knows my needs even before I ask, and He graciously provides for me. Whether it is physical needs, emotional support, or spiritual nourishment, He abundantly provides from His limitless resources. The Lord holds my future in His hands, and His plans for me are filled with hope and goodness. Even when life seems chaotic or unclear, I can trust that He is working all things together for my good.

Today, I am reminded that my blessings from the Lord are as abundant as the stars. His thoughts for me are more than the sand on every beach in every ocean and every dune in every desert. Each blessing serves as a testament to His faithfulness, love, and provision.

They bring hope, joy, and a deep sense of gratitude within me. Just as the stars light up the night sky, so do His blessings illuminate my life with purpose and meaning. I will never cease to offer thanks to the One who blesses me abundantly. He is so good to me. I will be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

I have learned that limited resources can actually be a blessing in disguise. It is during times of scarcity that I learn to truly appreciate the abundant provision of my God. My Heavenly Father promises to supply all my needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. His assurance fills my heart with gratitude and peace.

The Lord is my shepherd, and I lack nothing. My perspective shifts. Instead of dwelling on what I don’t have, I choose to focus on the blessings that surround me. I give thanks in all circumstances, for it is God’s will for me in Christ Jesus. Gratitude becomes a way of life, regardless of my circumstances. When I store up treasures in heaven—where they will never be destroyed or stolen—I am not in an anxious pursuit of material possessions. I appreciate the true riches found in a relationship with God.

Contentment becomes my companion as I embrace godliness and trust in the Lord with all my heart. I understand that a little with the fear of the Lord is far greater than abundance, accompanied by trouble. My focus shifts from accumulating worldly wealth to seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness first.

In moments of trials and challenges, I find solace in knowing that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. He is for me and not against me and since He is for me, who can be against me? The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, and His mercies are new every morning. I count it all joy when facing various trials, for they produce endurance and greater faith.

Today, I am reminded of the faithfulness of my Heavenly Father. He knows my needs and provides for me abundantly. My limited resources become an opportunity for thankfulness, as they draw me closer to God and deepen my dependence on Him. I am grateful for His provision, His guidance, and His unwavering love. God is so good!

In my solitude, I reflect on my life and on the many blessings that have been entrusted to me. I will give thanks to You, LORD, with all my heart and will tell of all Your wonderful deeds. Counting my blessings, I will remember the grace and goodness You’ve given me as Your child.

You have blessed me with every spiritual blessing in Christ and given me everything I need for life and godliness. I can ask you for what I need and thank you for what you’ve done. You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. My cup overflows. I am friends again with my Creator and have been bought with a price; I belong to God. My boundary lines have fallen in pleasant places. I am blessed to be a blessing.

Even in times of hardship and struggle, I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. I know that You work all things together for the good of making me more and more like Jesus. My trials are temporary and that a brighter future awaits. The best is yet to come for all who believe!

In moments of self-doubt, I remember that I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. It’s that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Today, I give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. He gives me so many reasons to keep gratitude in my heart.

  2. How can I better embrace both the hardships and the joys in my life, trusting that they are all part of a greater plan?

Reflecting on my travels, I often find myself in awe at the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Each new place I visit reveals another facet of His majesty, from the grandeur of mountain peaks to the depths of turquoise seas.

Travel has also taught me to trust in God’s guidance. I’ve learned to trust in the LORD with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding. I know that in all my ways I honour Him, and He makes my paths straight. Sometimes my journey was fraught with uncertainty, but I am reminded to cast my cares upon the Lord because He cares for me.

On my journeys, I have also learned to appreciate the diversity of people and cultures. I am in awe that from one person He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.

Every culture has its unique beauty and value, each one a testament to God’s creative power. He has put eternity in all of our hearts. My travels not just as personal adventures, but as opportunities to share God’s love with others. My travel experiences become a treasure trove of not just memories, but spiritual lessons, too.

Travel has taught me about God’s steadfast love, and faithfulness that spans beyond borders. I know that neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord. No matter where my journeys take me, I am assured that His love remains constant.

But perhaps one of the most profound lessons travel has taught me is gratitude. I’ve learned to give thanks in all circumstances; knowing this is God’s will for me. Whether I’m standing atop a mountain or navigating a bustling city street, I’ve learned to cultivate an attitude of gratitude for every experience.

Today, I treasure my travel experience and thank God for the opportunities I’ve had to experience more of His creation. I make the space to remember the awe and I am grateful.
